About the Work

This masterpiece of Viennese Biedermeier by Josef Danhauser (1841) is far more than a humorous canine scene: the dogs devouring the sleeping painter's work are a biting satire on art critics such as Moritz Gottlieb Saphir. Vormärz censorship even struck the original title, 'The Necessity of Muzzles' – a political dimension that gives the picture extraordinary cultural-historical significance to this day.
